Goedemiddag, kan ik u helpen?

Good afternoon, can I help you?

Dutch for everyday life in the Netherlands, explained in the language you already think in.

Real situations, explained in your language, practised out loud.

Rinava is a language-learning app for people who live in the Netherlands and are learning Dutch. The Dutch you practise stays the same for everyone; the explanations, grammar notes and cultural background are written in Simplified Chinese, English, Ukrainian or Polish, so you never have to learn one new language through another.

Uw tafel staat bij het raam. Welkom!

Your table is by the window. Welcome!

The restaurant you just saw is a theme in the App, with its scenes and the customs a phrasebook leaves out.

Scene tip from the same theme: Paying separately is common.

70 scenes, with more on the way

Every scene comes with its words, everyday expressions and listen-and-repeat practice, an audio explanation in your language, and a roleplay to act it out; every theme adds tips on local customs and how things are done. The words, expressions and listen-and-repeat practice of all 70 scenes are free, and so are 3 roleplays a week.

Every scene, explained in your language

Hear how the Dutch works before you say it. Rinava explains each scene’s dialogue in your language, line by line.

  1. 1

Line by line, in your language

What each line means, which words matter, and the custom behind it.

  2. 2

    Hear it again, slowly

The other person’s lines play once more, at a slower pace.

  3. 3

Then it’s your turn to say it

Rinava pauses for a few seconds so you can say the line out loud.

Free accounts hear the first scene of each theme in full and samples of the others; members hear all scenes. Listening needs an Apple or Google sign-in.

Roleplay practice

Practise the conversation before you need it for real. Your practice partner stays in the scene and answers as someone in that situation would. Afterwards you see what you said and how to say it better.

  1. 1

    A task for every scene

Each scene opens by telling you what to get done. Stuck? Help turns what you want to say in your own language into Dutch.

  2. 2

    Rinava coaches your sentence

When a sentence can be better, she rewrites it and explains why in your language.

  3. 3

    Say it again slowly

Didn’t catch it? The partner repeats the line more slowly, and phrases for asking again are at hand.

  4. 4

    Debrief and save expressions

At the end you see which goals you met and what help you used, and you save the expressions you want to keep.

Roleplay in the App: your practice partner asks “Sinds wanneer heeft u daar last van?”, you answer “Voor drie dagen.”, and Rinava corrects the preposition: “Sinds drie dagen.”

Listen firstRecommended

Listen first, then read.

In a roleplay you hear the other person’s Dutch line before you see it. If you can’t catch it, tap Show text. You work out the meaning by ear first, then check it against the text.

Prefer to read along, or need quiet? Switch to Listen and read or Silent at any time.

The same line after Show text: “Goedemorgen, huisartsenpraktijk. Waarmee kan ik u helpen?”, now with Hide text above it.

What you say comes back for review

Expressions you save in a conversation can go into My focus; scene cards, patterns and the words you add to review come back in your daily review. Rinava schedules them with the FSRS memory algorithm, so you practise again just before you would forget.

    Say it in a conversation
